Getting Here from There
When you have vintage audio, video or photographic materials that need restoration, how do you get your materials here from where you are?
• If your home or office is nearby, you can easily drive here and deliver in person.
• If distance makes driving inconvenient, you’ll need to send your materials. This is a two-step process.
First, to prevent damage in transit, pack it up!
Records
Use sheets of corrugated cardboard, two on each side of the disk, secured by rubber bands. Then pack the finished assembly in a cardboard carton surrounded by crumpled newspaper.
Tapes
Open reel tapes may be shipped in their original carton in a padded envelope. If no carton is available, protect the tape with cardboard and ship in a padded envelope.
An audiocassette may be wrapped in multiple layers of ordinary paper towel, then shipped in a padded envelope.
Videos
Videotapes are fairly durable. Pack in a padded envelope.
Photos
Protect the surface of your photo with a sheet of ordinary waxed paper – it won’t stick to the surface of the print. Then protect with corrugated cardboard and send in a padded envelope.
Now that you’ve packaged your original material, it’s time to send it!
• Over the years, the good old-fashioned U.S. Postal Service has proven remarkably dependable. For anything other than a phonograph record, use your local post office.
For better handling of your material, send it by Certified Mail with a return receipt. When your package arrives here, a green postcard is sent back to you to verify that delivery was made.
• To send phono records, see your nearby United Parcel Service office – they seem to be everywhere these days.
